In the latest episode of Bleav in Middle Age Warriors, Rick Sommers & I had a chance to catch up with New York Mets Hall of Famer, four time All-Star & three time NL saves leader, John Franco.
John, a true New Yorker, shares his thoughts on the many challenges facing the possible salvation of the 2020 MLB season. While at the time of my writing this blog, the latest word seems to be that money is becoming the sticking point with the owners and players union, John felt health and safety was tantamount.
John talks about his route to the majors and the people who helped him along the way. Some of his stories are quite enlightening about various moments in his career which is loaded with many highlights.
John and I have many similarities in that we are both Italian Americans who grew up in the boroughs. John was a Brooklyn guy who later moved to Staten Island, I was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens. We talked about some of the differences in the street games he played in what I considered the tougher Brooklyn. John and I both married our high school sweetheart. We both spent time working in Cincinnati where we lament about how hard it was to just find a decent slice of pizza. We also tried to resolve the long debated issue amongst Italians. Is that red stuff you make every Sunday with pasta and meatballs called gravy or sauce.? Have a listen to the podcast and you’ll find out what we think, as well as much more about John and his career.
